Religious persecution was codified in Mexico's 1917 Constitution with the intent of reducing the role of the Catholic Church. Priests and other Catholics paid for "Calles Law" with their lives. The law was not repealed until 1938. Catholic Mexicans who faced state persecution fled to the U.S. to safety. In support of these refugees, Council 1784 provided Christmas with help from Nogales, Texas, citizens, Christmas Day, 1936.
