The inclusion of animals is a common component of artworks depicting the birth of Jesus Christ, even though the Gospels never directly mention the presence of such animals at the manger. The Nativity has been depicted by artists all over the world and is often open to interpretation as to who is included. Various references in other parts of the Bible provide some reasoning behind why certain animals may appear in a Nativity.
This Christmas, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center presents Menagerie at the Manger: The Creatures of Christmas, an in depth look at the variety of animals that appear in crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the birth of Christ, showcasing almost 60 works from nearly 40 countries around the world.
Enjoy the Christmas season at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center through this exhibit, the Christmas Tree Festival, and additional programs, including our annual Christmastime Family Day. Make the following offerings a part of your family’s holiday tradition!
