On the morning of September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked midflight. Two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The world watched in horror as both towers collapsed because of this attack. Another plane crashed into the side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth plane was also aimed for Washington, but crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after the passengers revolted against the hijackers.
In total, 2,977 people were killed by these acts of terrorism. Thousands more were injured, and many others have died in the following years due to long term health effects. Of these victims, 46 were members of the Knights of Columbus.
The very next day, September 12, 2001, the Knights of Columbus created the $1 million Heroes Fund, which provided immediate financial support to families of all full-time professional law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel who lost their lives in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The first check was delivered on September 13, and by the time the Heroes Fund concluded, financial support was provided to 419 families of first responders.
To mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center remembers all the victims, their families, and the heroes who saved the lives of countless people and worked to help a grieving nation heal and rebuild.
This temporary display supplements our permanent memorial to Knights who perished on that fateful day, located in the Wall of History. Learn more on the 9/11 memorial exhibit page.
